I truly love figuring out fun and unexpected ways to work within constraints and lean into a project's limitations—like how to have a 200 person wedding in NYC on a shoestring budget, but still have it feel luxe and like no compromises were made. For my Music Hall of Williamsburg wedding, I created 10x14 risograph posters for invitations that folded down to fit in 5x7 envelopes. I printed on text weight paper to keep the cost of mailing to one stamp, but also because posters aren't expected to be heavy weight and it wouldn't seem like I was cutting corners.
The main decor for the event was large video projections on the stage of the venue created by light artist Steve Pavlovsky with his project Liquid Light Lab. I used a video from one of his performances as the background for our wedding website, and a still from that video as inspiration for the psychedelic yellow and blue shape on the invite. An additional still was used for the place setting "thank you" cards.
I painted canning jars white to use as vases and my husband Jesse created illustrations on them using neon pink paint markers to match the neon pink risograph ink from the invites. I also used a neon pink highlighter to accent the names on the placesetting cards, and attached neon green earplugs to each card for guests to use during the concert/reception.
With the help of my bridesmaids, I crafted all of the flowers for the event from paper, including 40 table arrangements, my bridal bouquet, 11 boutineers, 7 bridesmaid bouquets, and 3 corsages. All told I created over 700 flowers from paper for the event. An added bonus of what started out as a way to save money, is that years later I still have my wedding bouquet sitting in a vase in my studio.
