Suffragette City is a volunteer-run printed zine and community committed to promoting the creative and intellectual ideas of strong and outspoken self-identified women and non-binary individuals. I created Suffragette City in 2014 out of a desire to see more representation within creative spaces that are traditionally cis-male dominated. My goal was to utilize the power of the collective to work together and help each other succeed rather than climbing over each other to get ahead. When creating the identity I felt it was important that it referenced and stayed true to the “riot grrrl” movement of the 90's/early aughts that inspired me to make my first zines in highschool, while upholding a high production value. Suffragette City zine needed to look impressive in an artist's portfolio but also be accessible to teens and young adults, something they could pick up and think “I could make something like this.”
To stay true to zine culture’s DIY roots nearly all of the graphic layout, text treatments, and overlays were done without a computer, by hand on a xerox machine. Transparent vellum papers were layered or bleach solutions were sprayed on photographs and fabric to make text more readable. The logo was created from a hand carved block print, color wash backgrounds were painted with watercolor, and all headline fonts were drawn by hand. An emphasis was put on the imperfect nature of working analogue to invoke a feeling of genuineness.
